Argentina, November, 26h, 2017 (SIGNIS). At the 32nd Mar del Plata International film festival, SIGNIS awarded the Palestinian film Wajib, by Annemarie Jacir.
On the occasion of the marriage of his sister, Shadi returns to Palestine to help his father in the preparations of the event. Together, they go to the homes of family members and friends to invite them personally, as required by the tradition (the "Wajib").
Wajib shows in a simple, direct, empathetic, and humoristic way the reconciliation between generations by showing the strength of customs as well as family bonds. Through the father-son relationship, the film shows a population looking for solutions to reach peace and envelops the viewer in the dynamics of the reaffirmation of the truth while respecting oneself and the others.
The Jury also gave a special commendation to 5 Therapy, by Alisa Pavlovskaya (Ukraine), a film based on real facts that follows the life of a drug-addict Stas Dombrowski, who is trying to live a better life. The jury recognizes the use of a new and creative form of narration and production to talk about the delicate topic of drug addiction and to show the real possibility of redemption of the protagonist.
The jury members were Eduardo Freire (Argentina), Nestor Briceño (Venezuela) and Isabelle Verbrugge (Belgium).
