Rome, February, 9th, 2017 (Zenit). On the occasion of the Safer Internet Day, held on February 7, Mgr Dario Edoardo Viganò, prefect of the Secretariat for Communications, plead for “a greater awareness” while using social media, notably to tackle cyberbullying.

The international event, promoted by the European Commission, is celebrated in more than 100 countries for the 14 year. This year’s theme is “Be the change and unite to help create a better internet”.

In a statement to the Italian Catholic agency SIR, Viganò denounced “the increasing phenomenon of cyberbullying”. He recommended a “greater awareness” when it comes to using social media.

It is important “not only to fight but also ti prevent this phenomenon”, said the Prefect. He added that the “conscious use” must be done by youth and adults in order to avoid “a distorted use” of what is supposed to be “a great mean of information and socialization”.
